Bali Visa-on-Arrival vs. e-VOA: Which One Should You Pick?

By Vraj Thaker

The two options look similar but cost different time at immigration. Here's the honest comparison from travelers we've sent this year.

Indian passport holders have two paths into Bali: Visa-on-Arrival (VOA) at the Denpasar airport counter, or electronic Visa-on-Arrival (e-VOA) applied for online 48 hours before departure. Both cost IDR 500,000 (roughly ₹2,700). Both grant 30 days, extendable once for another 30. The difference is purely time, stress, and how you want to start your holiday.

VOA at the counter

The historical option, and still the default for travelers who don't plan ahead. You land at Ngurah Rai International Airport, queue for the VOA counter before immigration, pay in cash (IDR or USD accepted, cards often 'not working'), receive a sticker in your passport, then join the regular immigration queue.

  • Fastest option on paper: no advance work, apply on arrival.
  • Queueing time on busy days (Friday–Saturday arrivals): 45–90 minutes at the VOA counter, then another 20–40 minutes at immigration.
  • You'll need cash in IDR or USD. The airport ATM has a queue too.
  • You must have a printed return ticket and hotel confirmation — screenshots on a phone are increasingly refused.
  • Peak-season Friday landings from Mumbai or Delhi have hit two-hour immigration waits in 2025 and 2026.

e-VOA online

Apply through the official portal at molina.imigrasi.go.id up to 14 days but at least 48 hours before flying. Upload a passport scan, a recent photo, and your return ticket. Pay by international card. You'll receive a PDF with a QR code by email — that's your e-VOA.

At Denpasar, skip the VOA counter entirely. Head straight to the regular immigration queue. The officer scans your QR code, stamps your passport, and you're through — usually 15–25 minutes total.

"The ₹0 you save queueing for VOA is the most expensive ₹0 of your holiday. Get the e-VOA."

So which should you pick?

Our default recommendation is e-VOA, without exception, since October 2024. The application takes ten minutes, the portal is stable, and every hour you save at Denpasar is an hour on a beach in Uluwatu.

The only case we still recommend counter VOA: last-minute travelers landing within 24 hours of booking, where the 48-hour e-VOA processing window has already closed.

Two mistakes we see every month

  • Applying for e-VOA more than 90 days before travel — the visa validity clock starts on issuance, not entry, on some newer categories. Apply 14–30 days out.
  • Uploading a low-resolution passport scan. The rejection is silent — your file just sits in 'processing' for a week. Use a proper scanner or a document-scan app, not a raw phone photo.

A traveller first — an advisor second.

Vraj Thaker started Horizon Travels in Ahmedabad with a simple idea: international travel should feel simple, transparent and calm — not like a test you're expected to pass on your own.

He has lived in Canada and travelled personally through the United States, Canada, France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the UAE, Malaysia and Indonesia. Long-haul airports, immigration desks, visa files, accommodation, ground transport and the small cultural differences that decide whether a trip feels effortless or exhausting — he has been on the other side of all of it.

Horizon exists to give every traveller the confidence he wished someone had given him before his first flight out of India: an honest answer, a clear plan, and one person who stays reachable from the first question to the return leg.

  1. First international trip

A first passport, a first long-haul flight, and the very ordinary panic of not knowing what happens at immigration.

  2. Years living in Canada

Study permits, renewals, address proofs, banking, winters. Learning how a country actually works once the arrivals hall is behind you.

  3. Europe, on the ground

France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy — Schengen paperwork, rail connections, and how much a badly planned route really costs you.

  4. Dubai, Malaysia, Bali

Short-haul routes Indian families travel most, learned the way travellers experience them: hotels, transfers, and local realities.

  5. Horizon Travels, Ahmedabad

Everything learned across those trips, turned into one private, transparent, end-to-end service for travellers across India.
